Homeowners will be hoping to get even better value from their home insurance because new figures have shown how fragile many Brits' incomes are.
Contents insurance holders were £12 a week worse off in December 2011 in comparison to the same month in 2010, according to research by the national retailer Asda.
As a result, the typical UK household held £160 a week of discretionary income in December, representing a 7.2 per drop from a year ago.
Asda has blamed a sharp increase in unemployment for the situation, even though some improvements were seen in the cost of living.
Asda president and chief executive officer Andy Clarke said: "Jobs still matter, with the highest levels of unemployment for 17 years having a real impact on the way families feel."
Mr Clarke continued by stating that a growing divide has been seen between regions, with spending power remaining weak in the north of England.
