Home insurance holders in a North Yorkshire seaside town have been warned to stay vigilant when they are at home, following a number of burglaries in the region.

Offenders have been breaking in to residents' properties in an attempt to steal car keys, the Scarborough Evening News reports.

Police in the area have responded to nine of these incidents in the town throughout the last two weeks, with extra patrols being set up as a means of tackling the offences.

In order to lower the risk of the burglaries, the police force has recommended that contents insurance holders should keep vehicle keys out of view from people looking into their home, and guarantee that all doors and windows are secure.

As well as this, police officers have advised property owners to park their vehicles in garages, while ensuring that gates are closed and locked.
