How to stay safe after accidents

Saturday, 04 February 2012

For many drivers, most periods of commuting will go without a hitch every day. However, accidents do happen, and it is important to know what to do if this occurs.

Road charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued advice on how to remain safe in the aftermath of a bump, before making your car insurance claim.

The first tip from the IAM is to make sure that you are safe and away from the roadside, where you can exchange details with the other party.

Other advice includes putting on hazard lights to alert other drivers that you have stopped at the side of the road, and getting as many details from anyone else involved as possible.

IAM head of training, Simon Elstow, said: "It's important to be prepared in case you are involved in one. And if it happens, try not to get angry or upset."

Earlier this week, the Department for Transport said that the number of accidents in the UK had reduced over the last year.
