The importance of home contents insurance has been underlined by a recent burst water main in Merseyside.

More than 200 homes and businesses were damaged by a burst United Utilities pipe on Liverpool road, which local MP George Howarth does not believe local residents should have to pay for.

While the MP is calling for immediate compensation by the company to victims, those with home contents insurance will be able to ensure they have the best chance of replacing all damaged items.

In an early day motion tabled last week, Mr Howarth stated that the House noted "with disgust" the latest burst water main in Huyton, noting that this is the third time residents' homes have been flooded.

The motion, which was supported by five other MPs including Walton's Steve Rotheram, also "calls on United Utilities to arrange up-front compensation for the speedy reinstatement of residents' home contents and repairs; and further calls on the Government to carry out an urgent investigation into United Utilities unfitness to have responsibility for water supplies".
