Travel insurance: Iceland 'may become more popular'

Wednesday, 03 June 2009

More Brits may end up taking out travel insurance and heading to Iceland this year, if the comments of one industry body are anything to go by.

According to Abta - The Travel Association, the country's recent financial problems have made it a more affordable destination for tourists.

The group said it was previously regarded as a very expensive holiday spot, but that has now changed.

A spokeswoman for the organisation stated: "Prices certainly have become cheaper in terms of drinks and living and that kind of thing because the economy has collapsed."

She pointed out similar trends have been noted in countries like Cambodia, Thailand and Argentina over the years.

However, the group's representative added failing economies do not always mean cheaper prices for tourists.

She concluded she would not recommend people head to Zimbabwe as there is massive inflation.

Holidaymakers keen to keep costs to a minimum this year may find they can make significant savings by searching for cheap travel insurance.
