Car insurance holders should 'improve driving skills in 2011'

Wednesday, 05 January 2011

Car insurance policyholders should aim to improve their driving skills in 2011, it has been claimed.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) advises motorists consider taking a Skill for Life course in the new year to improve confidence and, in some cases, also reduce motor insurance premiums.

Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner, said: "Continuous personal development is often top of the mind at this time of year, but our skill as a driver, rider or cyclist can get taken for granted.

"Whichever way you travel, make doing it more safely and efficiently your goal for the new year."

One key way to boost driving skills, according to the IAM, is by getting out in the car and practising driving as much as possible. This way motorists gain experience and improve their confidence.

Recently, breakdown provider the AA warned motorists to plan ahead when travelling over the festive period.

It said around a third of the drivers it polled said they were planning to drive more than 100 miles over the Christmas and new year period and around 18 million people were set to take to the roads.
