Although offering adequate flood protection for river and coastal properties is a well-established procedure, inner city property owners have been warned they may want to evaluate their
home insurance cover.
This is because it has been claimed by the UK Flood Barriers organisation that homes of this sort are increasingly at risk from flash flood damage.
Chief executive for UK Flood Barriers Frank Kelly stated: "Most of the problems now are to do with flash flooding, because heavy rain is falling into overwhelmed drainage systems."
Mr Kelly advised that households in danger of flooding should consider suitable home insurance protection solutions in addition to contents insurance.
His guidance comes after a group of MPs entitled the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) identified a shortfall of funding to defend the five million homes that are at risk from flooding.
The PAC believes that the government's approach of enabling local authorities to spend their own money on defences is problematic in the current economic climate.
