Travel insurance 'seen as afterthought'

Tuesday, 08 June 2010

British holidaymakers view travel insurance as an afterthought, spending little time researching the best options, a new survey has revealed.

The average person spends several hours looking at hotels and flights but less than an hour researching travel insurance, the YouGov poll, commissioned by laterooms.com, revealed.

This is surprising considering recent research conducted by consumer magazine Which? found that many travel agents sell potentially unsuitable travel insurance policies and offer customers poor value-for-money.

Andrew Pumphrey, a spokesperson for laterooms.com, said people need to think about what cover they want from their travel insurance instead of considering it to be "a commodity you just buy off the shelf".

"It's very important that they consider the destination they are going to and the type of activity they are going to be doing when they get there," he said, drawing attention to watersports and skiing holidays as examples.

From today (June 8th), fewer travel insurance customers will be affected by the ash cloud, which is still causing flight disruption across Europe.

New measures have been introduced by the Civil Aviation Authority, relaxing flight restrictions, meaning more travel insurance policyholders will be embarking on their planned journeys.
