Car insurance customers driving a Renault Scenic II have been warned that the manufacturer is recalling more than 66,000 of its cars over fears of a faulty automatic handbrake.

Models built between September 2003 and June 2005 are prone to the fault, which could see the handbrake to activate while the car is in motion.

Drivers abroad have reported the fault, which is believed to be caused by wrongly-fitted battery cables to the vehicle's electronic parking brake computer, although there have yet to be any problems recorded in the UK.

"The mailing to owners will be carried out over 10 weeks," a Renault spokesman said.

"This started on July 1st and will finish until early September. So far more than 13,000 have returned to date."

It follows the news that Japanese car maker Toyota has announced 14 global recalls over the last 12 months over a variety of safety problems.
