Car insurance claims could be settled more quickly in future and premiums reduced, if computer chip developer Intel's 'intelligent' car manages to reduce the number of accidents on the roads.
Intel's car will be fitted with a black box of the kind used in aircrafts, which capable of recording information about vehicle speed, steering and braking, as well as providing video footage in the event of an accident.
The information could be transmitted to the police and car insurance companies to determine who was at fault.
Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, suggested that the black box system could be used to penalise those who persistently get behind the wheel without car insurance.
"If you have a record of driving without insurance then perhaps the installation of a black box might be something that a court could insist you have," he commented.
