Travel insurance: Kids' holiday spending money adds up for Brits

Wednesday, 09 August 2006

Many parents are forced to pay out significant amounts of money to help fund their child's trips abroad.

A recent study by a leading cheap travel insurance provider discovered that parents give their offspring around £192 million in spending money to help cover holidays overseas.

A total of 34 per cent of parents have children aged between 13 and 17 year olds who are planning to travel abroad without them over the next year and therefore four out of five parents will provide spending money for such trips.

Robert O'May, whose employer conducted the research, commented: "Many teenagers today are going abroad without their parents. But despite allowing their children this independence, our research shows that parents still feel the need to ensure their teenagers have adequate personal spending money to cover any needs whilst out of their care."

However, parents are reminded to make sure they save some money to purchase adequate travel insurance cover for their children, especially as it could help protect against the loss of stolen money or unexpected medical treatment.
