It is vital for people to be aware of what their home insurance policy covers, one group has underlined.

Protection for theft, fire damage and weather-related incidents are the most important aspects a policy should cover, with cover for flooding being especially crucial, a spokesman from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has stated.

Malcolm Tarling, spokesman for the ABI, has advised people to consider whether they want to cover possessions while they are out of their homes.

Mr Tarling explained: "If you have got expensive items, make sure they are listed separately and your insurer may charge you an extra premium to cover them."

He added that people who work from home will need a separate business policy in order to cover company books and equipment.

Securing this coverage may increase premiums, but it is necessary to properly protect your home and to provide the added security that their belongings are safe.
