Labour Party back speed limit change

Thursday, 01 March 2012

The Labour Party has given its support to plans that would see the speed limit on British motorways increased to 80mph.

At the end of last year, many road campaigners, including the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) called for the speed limit increase, as it said most people already travel at this speed, and it goes unpunished, while not pushing up the chances of car insurance claims.

Now Labour says that the rise could be beneficial to road users. As long as it is reviewed after a year, and if people are given clear guidance on what exactly constitutes breaking the speed limit and being charged for speeding.

Maria Eagle, Labour's shadow transport secretary, said: "Any new limit must be strictly applied with no speed creep allowing the de facto limit to head towards 90mph and Ministers must explain how they will enforce it at a time of cuts to the police."
