Holidaymakers who buy last-minute deals for breaks abroad have been warned that adequate
travel insurance is a must, as new research has shown 40 per cent of people suffer problems while away.
A study by the Bank of Scotland revealed that delayed luggage, medical emergencies, broken mobile phones and vehicle breakdowns are the most common mishaps to occur.
The research also found that half of those who suffer such incidents fail to take out annual travel insurance cover.
In addition, 38 per cent of those planning to enjoy a holiday abroad have still to purchase travel insurance cover.
Lisa Stephenson, head of customer experience, marketing and communications at the Bank of Scotland, said that many people believe they can get away with not taking a policy.
"As this study shows, accidents do happen and, for more common incidents like losing our luggage on holiday, breaking down or losing our mobiles, most of us don't realise the benefits of insurance until it's too late," she added.
