Car insurance: Speeding drivers benefit from awareness course
Friday, 14 March 2008
Motorists who chose to take a road awareness course in South Yorkshire instead of receiving points on their license have praised the scheme.
The course was introduced to help educate drivers about the dangers of speeding, as well as reducing the number of accidents, the Yorkshire Post reports.
Chief Inspector Ian Bint of South Yorkshire Police described how the classes are just another driver education tool to help make the roads safer.
"If we can achieve our objectives by educating people instead of prosecuting them then that is what we will do," he stated.
Keith Blower of Barnsley said that he learned a lot during his day on the course, saying: "It was fantastic and it really opened my eyes. I've been checking my speed ever since."
Speeders who are caught by police may find that their car insurance premiums are affected.
Recently, safety workers in Lancashire welcomed a government plan to review the learner driver process, which it said would improve road safety.
