Car insurance: Drivers should be vigilant about locking vehicle doors

Thursday, 11 February 2010

Drivers should be vigilant about locking vehicle doors to avoid having to make a claim on car insurance, Greater Manchester Police has advised.

The warning follows two car-jacking incidents in Stockport since the start of the year, which are currently being investigated by officers.

Police are now urging car users to be on their guard at all times and to take sensible precautions to protect themselves and their vehicles.

Detective constable Alan Smith said: "To make yourself as safe possible remain vigilant and aware of what is happening around you when approaching or leaving your vehicle and while driving."

He added that if a drivers feels an accident has been 'staged' to make them stop, or are concerned that they are being followed, they should drive to the nearest police station to report it.

Alternatively, drive to a safe public place where there are potential witnesses.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) recently issued a warning to drivers not to leave a car running unattended while waiting for the windscreen to defrost during icy weather, as this leaves the vehicle vulnerable to theft.
