More travel insurance customers opting for long-haul

More travel insurance policyholders are choosing to go to long-haul destinations than before, new research has shown.

Adventurous Brits seem to be heading further afield, with Swiftcover revealing that one in four of the travel insurance policies it sells covers long-haul holidays, compared with one in five only five years ago.

The insurance provider found that 23 per cent of people would go on their dream holiday to a tropical island, while 14 per cent would opt for a world cruise.

Ten per cent said an African safari would be their dream destination choice and 14 per cent would explore ancient ruins, such as Machu Picchu in Peru, for their once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Roman Bryl, travel underwriting manager for Swiftcover, said: "It's no surprise to see that luxury tops the list of dream destinations for us Brits, but it's interesting to note that people are becoming more adventurous in their tastes."

He recommended people check their travel insurance policy covers them for all eventualities, especially when travelling to faraway places.

Backpackers may wish to choose Swiftcover's gap travel insurance policy, which is tailored for their needs, said Mr Bryl.

Anyone travelling to Europe is set to benefit from new roaming limits on mobile internet use on their phones as Ofcom introduced a cap of £40 per month on bills.
