Higher car insurance costs could be incurred by those who fail to take the appropriate, basic precautions when driving, it has been claimed.

Despite statistics showing a fall in road casualties, DIAmond Advanced Motorists believes more can be done to improve road safety.

The organisation, which administers advanced driving tests on behalf of the Driving Instructors Association, indicated that simple steps can be taken by drivers to improve awareness on Britain's roads.

Suggestions include opening a window to hear traffic when views are obscured and using sunglasses and visors to prevent impaired vision.

Taking these precautions will help to reduce the risk of accidents, and also help to keep car insurance premiums low.

DIAmond chief examiner Mike Frisby explained: "While any fall in road casualties is to be welcomed, we can all do better.

"The fact that a form of human error is the largest cause of collisions suggests that we could all pay more attention to how we drive and think about how we can improve as road users."
