Look out for hazards ahead

Tuesday, 28 February 2012

Drivers on roads in the UK should be ensuring that they are keeping their eyes on the road to help them spot any hazards before it is too late, according to a leading road charity.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has followed up its advice for driving on icy roads from recently, by telling drivers the best way to spot hazards, bringing down the chance of crashing and having to make car insurance claims.

IAM head of training Simon Elstow said: "Hazards can be anything from a tree branch to a child walking along the pavement. Anticipating what other road users might do is key to being prepared and becoming a safer driver."

Top tips from the IAM include thinking about what might happen at all times on the road, so that drivers are never surprised, as well as keeping their eyes on other drivers to make sure they are ready for them making moves.

It also advised that people should always be using their mirrors, and should keep their eyes on the road ahead to make sure that they see hazards in plenty of time.
