Securing low cost motor insurance may become more important than ever for UK drivers, with prices for petrol and diesel increasing today. Fuel duty has risen by two pence per litre, despite opposition from various transportation groups. According to Used Car Expert magazine, the move places an unfair burden on road users. Editor Matthew Tumbridge stated: "It is unforgiveable that the government continues to increase the already extortionate taxes on the motorist." A poll by the publication revealed 74 per cent of drivers were seriously concerned about the latest rise in fuel duty. Statistics provided by the magazine show taxation accounts for more than 50 per cent of the cost of a litre of petrol or diesel. This is due to increase further in December, as the result of a 2.5 per cent VAT rise. Meanwhile, drivers worried about growing running costs may find they can help keep outgoings to a minimum by opting for the cheapest online car insurance.
