Make friends with Toyota car insurance?

Toyota car insurance customers will be able to interact more with their models as a result of a new social media project being launched by the Japanese firm.

The carmaker is working alongside US cloud computing firm Salesforce.com to devise the "Toyota Friend" service for owners of electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

To be launched in 2012, the new service will enable motorists to make friends with their cars, hold conversations and receive messages.

The manufacturer has described it as "a private social network that connects Toyota customers with their cars, their dealership, and with Toyota".

Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota, said: "Social networking services are transforming human interaction and modes of communication.

"The automobile needs to evolve in step with that transformation."

One of the key benefits of Toyota's new service is that it can send reminders to drivers that notify them to recharge their batteries, which may prove to be pivotal in avoiding road accidents.
