Holidaymakers keen to forget the doom and gloom in Britain by taking out travel insurance and getting as far away as possible this summer may find a new study provides some inspiration.

Kuoni's 2009 long-haul report has revealed the top 20 faraway destinations.

Number one on the list is the Maldives, Thailand clinches second spot and the USA takes third.

People who decide to head off to one of these countries this year may find taking out travel insurance provides valuable peace of mind, as this type of policy should cover any medical costs incurred should they fall ill or have an accident overseas.

Kuoni's report showed many Brits are considering looking beyond traditional short-haul locations, as a result of the weak pound.

Of those travellers questioned, 41 per cent said their top motivation for taking a holiday was to "soothe their souls".

A further 25 per cent revealed they go away to stimulate their minds.
