Car insurance: Mobile laws 'not harsh enough'

Monday, 11 February 2008

Laws introduced in the bid to stop drivers from using mobile telephones at the wheel are too lenient, according to road safety officials.

A poll undertaken by the Local Authority Road Safety Officers' Association (Larsoa) found that 75 per cent of members do not think the measures have been "effective".

Furthermore 90 per cent of respondents argued that the safety of the roads could be improved if the current laws were changed to become stricter.

Chair at Larsoa Malcolm Burns noted that more clearly needs to be done to ensure that less people disregard the rules.

He commented: "Our members are continuing to see people flaunting the law by using mobile phones whilst driving".

The official added that lives - both of the driver and other road users - could be put at risk because individuals are not giving their full attention to the roads.

Drivers caught breaking the law may find that their car insurance premiums are negatively impacted upon.

If motorists are taken to court over a mobile-related offence, then they could be liable to pay up to £1,000.
