Friday, 28 December 2007

New mobile speed cameras have been introduced onto the roads of West Mercia, it has emerged.

The Hereford Times has reported that state-of-the-art Gatso mobile cameras have been introduced by the Safer Roads Partnership (SRP).

Gatso cameras can be used on a tripod, setting them apart from other cameras, which have to be used within SRP vehicles.

The newspaper suggested this move would "heat up" the fight against speeding motorists.

Drivers involved in accidents could find that their car insurance premiums are affected.

Meanwhile Huntingdon is also planning the launch of new technology in a bid to catch drivers breaking the speed limit.

"Spec 3"Cameras between Ramsey Forty Foot and Chatteris operate using telephone line technology and do not need additional cabling," the Hunts Post reported.

Cambridgeshire county council engineer Amanda Mays said: "We can't install the cameras yet but this does not stop us doing the ground work.

"We always said it would be an 18-month to two-year project," she told the newspaper.
