Car insurance customers have been reminded to keep their car in good shape if they do not want to put their health at risk, after a new study found many vehicles contain harmful germs.
Tests were carried out for Halfords on car door handles, steering wheels, gear stick knobs, radio control buttons and car mats, finding that a number of invisible bugs make their homes in dirty cars.
A survey found that 70 per cent of drivers eat or drink in their cars, while 58 per cent said they had found food remains when cleaning out their vehicles in the past.
"It is important, particularly now the weather is becoming warmer, for people to ensure they do not leave food debris in their cars as bacteria such as Staphylococcus and Bacillus cereus can thrive on even tiny crumbs," commented Dr Anthony Hilton, reader in microbiology at Aston University.
