Travel insurance: More tourists for the UK

Travel insurance providers have had plenty of potential customers over the last 12 months thanks to a buoyant tourism sector.

The number of tourists who visited the UK in the year ending July 2006 rose by five per cent, according to data from the Office of National Statistics.

It was the Americans who increased their visits to the UK the most, with the number of tourists from the US to Britain increasing by seven per cent to a total number of 4.5 million.

The UK was also more popular with tourists from Western Europe with 19.8 million people choosing to travel to the UK, an increase of four per cent.

Tourists from the UK also increased their trips abroad this year with the number of visits abroad standing at 67.7 million for the 12 months ending July 2006 this is up three per cent on the previous year.
