The loss of concentration and lowering of reaction times resulting from a cold or flu virus could lead to more drivers making claims on their motor insurance.

This is according to new research, which discovered that motorists suffering from heavy colds have reaction times that equal those who have been under the influence of four double whiskies.

It is accepted that this amount of alcohol could increase the likelihood of them suffering an accident on the road, meaning that illness could present dangers similar to those associated with drink driving.

Halfords' winter driving expert Mark Dolphin said: "The best place to be when you have flu or a heavy cold is at home, but if you really must go out, get someone else to take you and avoid driving."

Mr Dolphin commented that other drivers should be aware of those around them and increase the distance between themselves and road users who are seen sneezing.
