Texting while driving, which could not only land drivers with a fine but also cause a car insurance claim in the event of an accident, has been named as one of the biggest distractions for motorists.

A poll by Autoglass found that more than half (51 per cent) of motorists agreed that sending an SMS while behind the wheel was one of the biggest reasons for them to take their eyes off the road.

This was followed by another phone-based danger - chatting while driving emerged as the second most distracting thing.

Other actions likely to cause an accident and raise car insurance quotes included changing the radio or CD player, looking at an accident, eating or drinking and having children in the car.

Meanwhile, men were found to be twice as likely as women to have their attention caught by a member of the opposite sex, while women were twice as likely as men to be distracted by animals on the road.
