Motorists angered by 'soft bans'

Thursday, 02 February 2012

The vast majority of UK drivers believe there should be no exceptions when it comes to banning people who have 12 points on their licence from driving.

It has been revealed that the number of drivers in the UK who have 12 points on their licence but are still on the road now amounts to some 10,000, allowed to drive because of exceptional circumstances.

However, a survey from GEM Motorting Assist has revealed that 80 per cent of car insurance customers in the UK are of the opinion that there should be no exemptions, and anyone with 12 points should be banned.

Many across the UK risk bans every days, and it was recently revealed that over 23,000 drivers in Kent were caught speeding in 2010 alone.

David Williams, chief operating officer with GEM said: "Road safety is hugely compromised when so many motorists, not worthy of a licence, are still driving. To make our roads as safe as possible, we need to ensure bans and penalties are taken seriously."
