Car insurance: Motorists must 'prepare for long trips'

Wednesday, 20 May 2009

Motorists who do not want to end up relying on the breakdown cover that came with their car insurance policy should ensure their vehicles are well prepared for long trips, it has been claimed.

Continental Tyres issued this advice ahead of the bank holiday weekend, when it is expected significant numbers of families will take to roads up and down the UK for days out.

Spokesman Tim Bailey stated: "It's important to make sure that your car is fit to do the journey - after all you don't want to spend time broken down at the side of the road."

This comes after research by the company found 65 per cent of motorists fail to check they have enough screen wash before setting off on a trip.

In addition to this, the poll also found 50 per cent of drivers do not assess tyre pressure and 73 per cent do not look at tread depth.

Motorists who do not maintain their vehicles properly may find their auto develops a serious fault that could lead to an accident.

This in turn may result in them losing access to cheap car insurance.
