Nearly one in five youngsters 'can't prepare toast'

Wednesday, 03 October 2012

Are you one of the many home insurance holders who shares your home with someone in their late teens or early twenties?

Almost 1,000 parents with a child in this age bracket were recently surveyed by Sainsbury's, with the supermarket discovering nearly one in five kids at this stage of life would find it difficult to prepare toast.

Approaching a third, meanwhile, can't boil eggs, with around the same number finding potato baking tricky and 42 per cent ignorant of the technique involved in shirt ironing.

"Despite feeling like fully fledged adults, the reality is that a whole host of students heading off to college this month need a crash course as to how to set themselves up for their new lives. Teenagers are more than capable of looking after themselves but the vast majority don’t even own a saucepan!" the Sainsbury's representative commented.

The survey also discovered that more than 50 per cent of youngsters could work out how to get broadband on a laptop.
