Nissan announce UK-made hatchback

Monday, 12 March 2012

Car manufacturer Nissan is set to produce a new hatchback model in the UK.

The government has offered help for the project to the tune of £9.3 million as part of its Regional Growth Fund. The cars will be made in Sunderland.

Nissan's new car, named the Invitation, will be available to car insurance holders when it premieres next year. 2,000 British jobs will be created as a result of its introduction.

"I'm delighted that Sunderland has secured what will be another very important model for Nissan in Europe. It is a testament to the workforce, the ongoing support from the UK government and all of our regional partners and suppliers," said manufacturing vice president of the company, Trevor Mann.

"Vehicle manufacturers are beating a path to the UK's door," Vince Cable, the business secretary, has said of the announcement. "They recognise that the government values the automotive sector."

Nissan have invested £125 million in the new car.
