Car Insurance: Police seize 25 vehicles without cover

Tuesday, 25 November 2008

Northumberland police revealed they have caught 25 people driving without car insurance during an initiative to target criminals on the road.

Operation Magnitude used automatic number plate recognition to track suspect motors.

The system scans registrations and matches them against a database to identify vehicles of interest.

Commenting on the operation, Chief Inspector Simon Packham said: "It is a fact that uninsured cars are used by criminals to commit crime."

He added: "By taking them off the roads we can ... cut crime and improve the safety of other road users."

Those drivers who were caught behind the wheel without motor insurance had their vehicles seized.

Owners of those cars have a week to produce valid documents and pay £150 and £20 per day storage costs or their vehicles will be crushed.

Elsewhere, an operation in West Yorkshire aimed at preventing criminals from using the roads saw 200 people stopped and more than 40 penalty notices handed out.
