One colour best, says carpet expert

Tuesday, 01 May 2012

A single shade of colour is best when deciding how to cover floors, a carpet expert has said.

Home insurance holders and anyone else trying to give a new theme to their underfoot space should opt for a single "plain" design and install it both in their bedroom and on the landing outside, according to Egerton Designs' Alexi Sugden.

This gives the sense of a continuity between spaces while a mood of luxury will also be achieved, he suggested.

The interior design practice founder said: "There is nothing worse than opening a door and finding in one room blue, in another red, in a third beige, [et cetera]."

Those concerned with making sure every element of their design fits together would be well served by a beige choice, he suggested. As well as providing good compatibility with other items, such a carpet also has the benefit of being fashionable and universally well-liked, he added.

He also suggested that when looking for the best carpet "cost and [appearance] have to be balanced…A carpet is likely to be one of the most expensive items in any home improvement [project]".

The Countrywide group recently found that, when it came to "home improvements and refurbishments" some were forking out large sums.

Among people whose residence had been bought two years ago or under, some 34 per cent were shelling out a figure above £7,500, the organisation reported.
