Although many Brits may be cutting back on home improvements and contents insurance to preserve cash in the short term, it seems that more needs to be done to make us realise that this is a false economy.

Eight per cent of people are thinking about not renewing their home insurance to save pennies, while a third are putting off maintenance work, research from Gocompare.com has shown.

Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, says it's vital the government educates homeowners about the importance of making improvements that will save money in the long term.

He also believes that energy efficiency is "crucial" for homes and that small improvements that are completed now can lead to substantial savings in the future.

However, he concedes that these can cost a lot to begin with, and homeowners may have to "sit back on their laurels" until more cash is available to them.
