Over 50% of home insurance holders 'will have outdoor Xmas decorations'

Friday, 19 November 2010

More than half (52 per cent) of home insurance policyholders will have outdoor Christmas decorations up this year, a new survey has revealed.

However, those with contents insurance may not be aware that powering festive lighting could add as much as the equivalent of three weeks' use to their winter energy bills, Gocompare.com warns.

More than eight in ten (85 per cent) of those surveyed by the price comparison site admitted they have no idea how much fairy lights, inflatable Santas and flying reindeer will add to their energy costs.

On average, home insurance holders are expected to spend around £236 on Christmas decorations to get their properties into the festive spirit this year.

Phil Paterson-Fox, head of home services at Gocompare.com, said: "This year, it looks like you could be in the minority if you aren't planning to bling-up your home for Christmas.

"However, regardless of whether you are going to adorn your home with external Christmas decorations or not, now's the ideal time to check that you've got the best energy deal."

Recently, the price comparison site revealed that cash-strapped people are cutting back on eating out in a bid to reduce their expenditure.
