Park on the left, IAM advises drivers

Friday, 27 January 2012

Parking is one of the most difficult and stressful aspects of driving, but motorists could improve their skills thanks to tips from the IAM.

Simon Elstow, head of training at the organisation, said that parking on the left-hand side can help those who are not confident.

This should always be the case at night time, and the advice could help unsure motorists avoid making a car insurance claim.

When using a car park, reversing into a space will help drivers get away quickly as they will be facing in the right direction.

"Parking is an essential part of driving which many people find stressful. Don't feel pressurised by other drivers waiting for you to park – it's important to take your time," added Mr Elstow.

After finding a space, drivers should make sure that they check for any hazards before taking into account the three key skills of parking; accuracy, control and observation.
