Travel insurance: Check your policy for piste closure cover

Tuesday, 19 December 2006

European snowfall is very late this year and skiers are being urged to check their travel insurance documents to see if they are covered for piste closures.

One consumer web portal has found that cheap travel insurance policies vary considerably in what they cover regarding lack of snow, piste closures and avalanches.

Avalanches may delay departure to or from your resort and will therefore add to costs, while some policies offer transfer to another resort in the case of piste closure.

Kate Marsden, from the portal, said: "When selecting a travel policy to cover winter sports, remember that while personal liability, medical expenses and ski equipment cover are obviously important, in this age of global warming, it's worth checking you have realistic cover for piste closure and travel to an alternative location."

The late snow this year is due to climate change because glaciers are receding and the earth is getting warmer.
