Police campaign cuts burglary rates

Friday, 10 February 2012

A new police campaign backed by local residents has helped to dramatically reduce the rates of burglary in the East Riding.

Police officers in the area have been going around waking up residents at night who have left windows open, inviting burglars to have a go, and helping to reduce the number of home insurance claims in the area as a result.

These measures saw the rates of burglary in the East Riding fall in 2011 by five per cent when compared to the year before.

Divisional commander chief superintendent Paul Davison told This is Hull and East Riding: "After a spike in burglaries last summer, the tactic of knocking on doors where homes were insecure has had an impact."

He went on to say that the force was "proud" of what it had achieved.

Earlier this week, the Birmingham Mail reported that police in the Midlands are looking to use hi-tech computer systems to try to predict the patterns of crime in any given area.
