Car insurance: Police focus on morning after drink-drivers

Tuesday, 09 December 2008

A festive road safety campaign launched by Tayside police could see the number of car insurance claims made in the area fall this winter.

The force said during previous initiatives it had received excellent support from members of the public who reported suspected drink or drug-drivers.

However, this year it stated it would be on the look out for people who get behind the wheel the morning after a heavy drinking session, as well as those drivers who take to the road immediately after consuming alcohol.

Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman, head of road policing in Tayside, said motorists should ignore the myths surrounding how and when it is safe to drive after drinking.

He stated: "Do not drive if there is the slightest chance that you are over the drink-drive limit, or even if you feel hung over."

This comes after police in Northern Ireland warned motorists, if they are convicted of getting behind the wheel while over the limit, they will struggle to find car insurance in the future.
