Police crack down on illegal drivers

Monday, 06 February 2012

Police in Sutton have launched one of their biggest ever crackdowns on people being on the roads illegally this year, to try to stop the flow of people who should not be driving.

The force stopped 284 drivers for checks on the roads near Croydon on February 2nd, with 60 officers taking part in the project to ensure the roads are safer.

Along the way, 16 cars were seized because the drivers did not have car insurance, while one driver was arrested for being banned and still driving, and another for an immigration offence.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Chambers, told the Sutton Guardian: "Research shows that 80 per cent of uninsured vehicles are driven by people who are involved in criminal activities or have a criminal record and are nine times more likely to be involved in a collision."

At the end of last year, a study from MoneySupermarket discovered that there are some 1.4 million people making the roads unsafe by driving without car insurance.
