Police cuts are 'risking lives'
Saturday, 28 January 2012
Cuts to the number of traffic police on the roads is putting motorist's lives at risk, according to road safety charity Brake.
It revealed that there are 11.6 per cent less officers looking to catch drunk and dangerous drivers compared to five years ago. Last month, Lord Blair said that assurances need to be offered that cuts to police funding would not affect the number officers working in the UK.
In Wales, the amount of traffic police has fallen by 37 per cent since 2007, and Brake has called on the government to take action to prevent these cuts and offer greater protection to car insurance policyholders.
Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive of Brake, said: "It is crucial the government acts now to put a stop to these dramatic cuts in life-saving roads policing, by making this a national policing priority. This is crucial in safeguarding the public and preventing needless casualties that lead to terrible suffering."
