Monday, 19 May 2008

A number of motorists have been stopped by police in the Thames Valley area after a drive to stop those not wearing seatbelts.

Checks were instigated at a number of spots by the police, Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership and West Berkshire council, reports Newbury Today.

In total, 154 drivers were stopped and given the chance to attend a special road safety workshop were they can learn about new techniques.

Road Safety Constable for Berkshire West PC Julian Weal said that not wearing a seatbelt is a serious crime.

He told the publication: "The road safety checks carried out across the area demonstrate that people are still prepared to take the risk of not wearing their seatbelt, even though it has been proven that they can save lives."

Mr Weal added that a good proportion of those caught decided to attend the workshop that took place last week.

Last week, the government proposed that 20mph speed limits be introduced on urban roads in an effort to save lives.

Those caught without a seatbelt may find that their car insurance premiums are negatively impacted upon.
