Female car insurance customers 'concerned by policy covering lost keys'
Saturday, 19 June 2010
Female motor insurance policyholders are more concerned whether their car insurance policy covers the cost of replacing locks if keys are lost or stolen than men.
Some 45 per cent of car insurance policies do not cover the replacement of locks when keys are lost, while 26 per cent provide less than £1,500 of cover if this occurs, according to research by independent financial research company Defaqto.
If the keys are stolen, less than a quarter (24 per cent) of motor insurance policies covers the cost of replacing the keys, although separate lost key policies can be purchased.
"Where cover is given, most policies will pay for the costs of replacing the locks, subject to any policy limit.
"Other policies also include cover for the costs of replacing the vehicles lock transmitter and central locking interface, and the affected parts of the alarm and/or immobiliser," said Mike Powell, insight analyst for general insurance at Defaqto.
Recently, the Independent advised people attending festivals to ensure they have appropriate car insurance if they are driving to the event, as well as adequate breakdown cover so they do not get stuck if their car fails.
