Car insurance: Mangled car display discourages motorists
Tuesday, 15 August 2006
Police are hoping to highlight the dangers of drink driving by displaying the wreckage of a car by the side of the road.
Officers are hoping that the mangled car will persuade other motorists that drink driving is not acceptable and is putting lives at risk.
The car to be displayed was driven by a man found to be almost twice over the legal limit in Corsham, Wiltshire. Although the driver survived the crash, another road user, a 55-year-old father, was killed in the incident.
Chief inspector Nick Ashley said: "It is examples such as this one that show the devastation that can be caused when a motorist decides to get into the driver's seat after drinking alcohol."
The drink driver admitted careless driving and was sentenced to three years in prison and banned from driving for five years.
The car will be on show in Chippenham's town centre on August 29th and will highlight the dangers of drink driving, which can not only kill, but can invalidate car insurance policies and lead to long-term driving bans.
