An increasing number of car insurance claims are being made as a result of damage done to vehicles by potholes and poorly-surfaced roads.

The lingering cold snap which swept Britain earlier this year damaged roads across the country and motorists have felt the consequences, with many having to claim on their insurance after driving over deep chasms, according to thisismoney.co.uk.

Breakdown specialists AA states that it has received an average of seven claims a day since mid-January for pothole damage and expects this figure to rise if and when the cold weather returns.

Simon Douglas, from the firm, said: "It would take a quarry-like pothole to cause the sort of damage that would justify an car insurance claim, but there are certainly some 'A-list' holes out there," he added.

John Hansed, head of highways in Derbyshire, recently warned motorists in the area to drive carefully on the A52 after the recent cold snap caused damage to the surface of the road.ADNFCR-3010-ID-19602273-ADNFCR
