Car insurance claims for pothole damage are expected to surge as the snow and ice subside.

Constant sub-zero temperatures will have had a huge impact on the nation's roads, especially stretches which haven't been salted, and there's a warning that many will simply be crumbling.

It could take some time until the roads are repaired too, as it will cost local authorities hundreds of millions of pounds to fill them in.

Hitting a pothole can cause problems ranging from a burst tyre, to alignment issues and damaged suspension.

It can also cause dents to the wheels and undercarriage of the car.

If the roads are not repaired then drivers, cyclists and motor bike riders could be at risk from expensive damage and injuries.

Some car insurance providers are calling on the government to release emergency funds to deal with the problems caused by the coldest winter in 30 years.ADNFCR-3010-ID-19559573-ADNFCR
