Car insurance: Pothole website back online

Tuesday, 24 March 2009

Motorists who do not want to jeopardise their cheap car insurance premiums by having to make a claim as the result of damage caused by uneven road surfaces may want to pay a visit to a recently re-launched website.

Potholes.co.uk offers a step-by-step guide on how to claim compensation from councils for such mechanical problems.

The online resource also allows drivers to enter the details of particularly poorly-maintained roads, so other motorists can avoid such routes.

Warranty Direct set up the website because it claims potholes contribute to one in three mechanical failures on cars.

Spokesperson Duncan McClure said driving on uneven surfaces can cause significant damage to springs, shock absorbers, stabiliser bars and upper and lower arms.

"With a £1 billion shortfall in the government's road maintenance funds, Warranty Direct has long believed that the motorist shouldn't be stumping up for the damage done by poorly-maintained roads," he added.

Taking cars for regular servicing may also catch problems before they become too serious, thereby helping vehicle owners avoid having to claim on their motor insurance.
