Car insurance: Motorists warned about threat of 'invisible' potholes
Tuesday, 05 January 2010
Motorists are being warned about the threat of 'invisible' potholes leading to car insurance claims after a rise in accidents.
The road maintenance campaign website Potholes.co.uk has reported an increase in drivers failing to notice water-filled potholes until it was too late - leaving many counting the cost of the damage to their vehicles.
There has been a 65 per cent rise in defects on English roads alone during the past decade, with the shortfall in funding for repairs running at an estimated £1.6 billion, according to an Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance report, which will affect the prices on car insurance quotes.
What is more, severe winter weather and longer hours of darkness have only added to the problem.
Duncan McClure Fisher of Potholes.co.uk said icy conditions had created new potholes across the country and warned motorists to be careful when driving.
"Treacherous ice and snow may be at the forefront of drivers' minds as the main hazard, but potholes are another danger they need to be aware of," he added.
