Car insurance: UK potholes could cost billions to fix

Wednesday, 10 March 2010

Britain's pothole problem could cost billions of pounds to fix, it has been claimed, after the number of potholes increased by 60 per cent in the past two years.

Recent bad weather and snow has caused a huge rise in the number of potholes on UK roads.

Research carried out by GEM Motoring Assist found that half of UK drivers have suffered damage to their vehicles as a result of potholes, potentially resulting in a claim on car insurance.

Now the Daily Telegraph reports that Local Government Association has asked ministers to stump up £100 million in extra funding to help councils carry out essential work.

However, the Asphalt Industry Alliance estimates that there are now at least 1.5 million potholes in UK roads - twice as many as in 2007.

With each pothole costing on average £70 to repair, the Alliance claims that to do the job properly instead of "patch and mend" would cost £10 billion.
